Check out Kelley Blue Book's 2023 Toyota Highlander 4-Cyl First Drive!
The current generation Toyota Highlander launched with a V6 and a hybrid version. For 2023 the hybrid carries over but the 3.5L V6 is no more. The new mill is a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder and here are the power figures (265hp, 310 lb-ft). For comparison, here are the old V6’s numbers (295hp, 263 lb-ft).
Astute viewers will note that the 4-cylinder’s 265 horsepower output is less than the former V6’s 295 horsepower. So horsepower is down but torque is up in a big way, which helps explain how the turbo 4 can tow the same 5,000 pounds as the departed V6.
Along with satisfying driveability, the Highlander’s new 4-cylinder contributes to improved fuel economy. (2023 4-Cyl: 22city/29hwy) (2022 V6: 21city/29hwy) Ok, it’s only 1MPG thriftier in city driving versus the V6 but these days every MPG helps. If a 4-banger Highlander sounds good, you can buy one starting at $36,420 plus destination charges. That’s a $565 bump versus 2022.
Improved efficiency, lower emissions, and respectable performance make the turbo 4 a welcome change from the V6. And I’m sure you’ll get used to the sound.
